In a significant bureaucratic reshuffle, the Government of India has prematurely repatriated Himanshu Gupta, a 2012-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre, from his position as Secretary of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Gupta was serving under the Department of School Education & Literacy in the Ministry of Education, where he was responsible for overseeing key administrative and policy-related functions of the country’s premier school education board.
According to the official order, he has been sent back to his parent cadre, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), before the completion of his deputation tenure. The repatriation has been approved with the condition of an “extended cooling-off” period.
As per the terms of the order, Gupta will not be eligible for any further central deputation assignments until December 12, 2030. The extended cooling-off clause effectively bars him from returning to a central deputation post for more than four years.
An officer of the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre, Himanshu Gupta has held several important administrative assignments during his career. His tenure at CBSE coincided with a period of continued reforms and administrative initiatives in the school education sector.
