Sanjeev Jain Appointed India’s Next Ambassador to North Korea

Sanjeev Jain, an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 2008 batch, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, commonly known as North Korea. He is currently serving as the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Cabo Verde.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Jain is expected to take up his new assignment shortly.

From Cabo Verde to Pyongyang

Sanjeev Jain is currently representing India as its Ambassador to Cabo Verde. He was appointed to the position in 2023 after serving as a Director in the Ministry of External Affairs.

With his latest appointment, Jain will now move to Pyongyang, where he will lead the Indian mission in North Korea.

The new assignment marks another important responsibility in his diplomatic career. As India’s Ambassador, he will represent the country in official engagements and handle diplomatic communication between New Delhi and Pyongyang.

Sanjeev Jain is a 2008-Batch IFS Officer

Sanjeev Jain belongs to the 2008 batch of the Indian Foreign Service. During his diplomatic career, he has worked in the Ministry of External Affairs and has also served in overseas assignments.

His experience in the ministry as well as in leading an Indian mission abroad is expected to support him in his new role as Ambassador to North Korea.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that he is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

India and North Korea Maintain Diplomatic Relations

India and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have maintained diplomatic relations for several decades. India has an embassy in Pyongyang, which serves as the main channel for official communication and diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

The relationship has included political engagement as well as cooperation in areas such as humanitarian assistance and capacity building.

India has continued to maintain diplomatic contact with North Korea, making the role of the Ambassador in Pyongyang important for managing bilateral communication and representing India’s interests.

Diplomatic Engagement to Remain a Key Focus

As India’s Ambassador to North Korea, Sanjeev Jain will be responsible for representing the Government of India in Pyongyang and maintaining official communication with the North Korean authorities.

His responsibilities will include handling bilateral matters, facilitating government-level engagement and protecting India’s diplomatic interests.

The Indian Embassy in Pyongyang remains an important institutional link between the two countries. The Ambassador plays a key role in maintaining diplomatic dialogue and managing matters related to bilateral relations.
