Pandey will succeed Amit Garg, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, who has been serving as Director of the National Police Academy. The appointment is part of a set of senior-level changes involving key central police and training institutions.
1994-Batch IPS Officer of Uttar Pradesh Cadre
Sujeet Pandey is a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. According to the Uttar Pradesh Police officer profile, he joined the IPS in 1994 and holds a postgraduate degree in History.
Over the years, Pandey has held several important policing and administrative assignments. He has also served as Lucknow’s first Police Commissioner and was later elevated to the Director General rank.
His latest appointment places him at the head of one of India’s most important police training institutions, responsible for the professional training and development of Indian Police Service officers.
Tenure Until July 31, 2028
According to reports on the appointment, Pandey will serve as Director of SVPNPA from the date he assumes charge until July 31, 2028, which is the date of his superannuation, or until further orders. The post is at Level 16 of the pay matrix.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment. Pandey was working in his parent cadre before being selected for the central assignment.
His appointment marks a significant move from state-level policing and leadership responsibilities to the management of a national-level institution that plays a central role in training future police leaders.
Pandey to Succeed Amit Garg
Sujeet Pandey has been appointed to the SVPNPA post in place of Amit Garg, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. Garg has been moved to head the National Crime Records Bureau, or NCRB, according to reports on the latest round of senior police appointments.
The reshuffle also includes appointments in other major central policing organisations. These changes involve leadership positions in institutions dealing with police research, crime records and training.
SVPNPA Plays Key Role in IPS Training
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad is one of the country’s key institutions for police leadership training. The academy is primarily associated with the training of Indian Police Service officers and plays an important role in preparing officers for leadership responsibilities across states and central police organisations.
As Director, Sujeet Pandey will be responsible for leading the academy and overseeing its training, institutional development and administrative functions.
His experience in field policing, senior command positions and police administration is expected to be central to his new role at the academy.
Major Central Assignment for Sujeet Pandey
The appointment as SVPNPA Director is a major central assignment for Pandey, who has served in a range of senior positions during his career.
Pandey was also empanelled for holding Director General and Director General-equivalent posts in the Government of India, according to reports published in 2025.
With his appointment now approved, Sujeet Pandey will take charge of the Hyderabad-based National Police Academy and remain in the post up to July 31, 2028, subject to the terms of the appointment order.
