Former Election Commissioner Arun Goel (Retd IAS: 1985: PB), who resigned unexpectedly during a visit to West Bengal ahead of the Lok Sabha 2024 preparations, has been appointed as Ambassador of India to the Republic of Croatia. He is set to assume this important role shortly.
Goel will succeed Raj Kumar Srivastava, a 1997 batch IFS officer, who is currently India’s representative to Croatia. The appointment is seen as a form of compensation for Goel’s valuable service and the manner in which he managed his resignation.
Goel’s tenure as Election Commissioner was scheduled to last until 5th December 2027, and he was expected to become the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) following Rajiv Kumar’s retirement in February 2025.
In a similar vein, Ashok Lavasa (Retd IAS: 1980: HY), who also resigned abruptly, has been compensated with a significant position. The Government of India nominated him for a key role as Vice-President for Private Sector Operations and Public–Private Partnerships at the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
