As the extended tenure of Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary Veera Rana (IAS: 1988: MP) approaches its end on September 30, 2024, there remains uncertainty over her successor. The state government has not proposed any extension for Rana, indicating that Madhya Pradesh is set to welcome a new Chief Secretary. Reports suggest that Rana may be appointed as the State Chief Information Commissioner following her retirement.
The speculation surrounding the next Chief Secretary has captured attention in Bhopal’s power corridors, with three names frequently mentioned: Anurag Jain (IAS: 1989: MP), Rajesh Kumar Rajora (IAS: 1990: MP), and Sheonarayan Misra (IAS: 1990: MP). Misra recently entered the discussion, although he is set to retire in January 2025. His short remaining tenure might limit his candidacy, despite the possibility of a service extension.
Jain, currently Secretary for Road Transport and Highways, is unlikely to return to the state due to the political significance of his current role. Meanwhile, Rajora stands out as a strong candidate, having demonstrated his capabilities as Principal Secretary to former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. His recent appointment as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) indicates a close rapport with CM Mohan Yadav and suggests a strategic succession plan ahead of Rana’s departure.
