With Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik (IAS: 1987) set to retire at the end of June, the state bureaucracy is abuzz with speculation over who will succeed her as the next top bureaucrat of Maharashtra.
Among the leading contenders is Rajesh Kumar (IAS: 1988), currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue). Also in the fray is I S Chahal (IAS: 1989), Additional Chief Secretary (Home), who, according to insiders, stands a fair chance of securing the coveted post. Sources indicate that Chahal’s proximity to key decision-makers and his handling of significant administrative challenges in the past may work in his favor.
Rajesh Aggarwal (IAS: 1989), currently serving as Secretary in the Union Ministry of Social Justice, was initially considered a strong contender. However, sources suggest that the Centre may not relieve him from his current role, making his appointment unlikely.
Other notable names being discussed include Manisha Patankar Mhaiskar (IAS: 1992), Additional Chief Secretary (PWD); Anil Diggikar (IAS: 1990), Additional Chief Secretary for the Divyang Kalyan Department; and Bhushan Gagrani (IAS: 1990), who currently holds the post of BMC Commissioner. Each brings a unique administrative track record, making the final decision a closely watched affair in bureaucratic and political circles alike.
