The Railway Ministry has paused the appointment process for filling high-level vacancies at Level 17 (Chairman/Member, Railway Board) and Level 16 (General Managers) due to growing discontent among officers recruited through the Indian Engineering Services (IES) stream.
A notification issued on August 13, 2024, had invited applications from officers of the 1989 and 1990 batches for empanelment to these top posts within the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). However, this notification was suspended on August 16, 2024.
The delay is attributed to dissatisfaction among IES officers who feel disadvantaged compared to their counterparts recruited through the Civil Services Examination (CSE). IES officers have expressed frustration that the notification favored a smaller group of eligible officers from their stream, while a majority of candidates considered for these posts were those who joined the railways through CSE.
