UPSC Writes to Punjab Govt Again Over Appointment of Regular DGP

A fresh deadlock appears to be emerging over the appointment of a regular Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab, with the Union Public Service Commission sending another reminder to the state government seeking a panel of eligible officers for the post.

By NSB.News

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has once again written to the Government of Punjab, asking it to submit a panel of eligible officers for the appointment of a regular Director General of Police (DGP) in the state. The commission’s earlier communication reportedly failed to receive any response from the state government within the stipulated time.

According to sources, the fresh letter was sent on March 5. The reminder, issued by UPSC Secretary Shashi Ranjan Kumar, has been addressed to Punjab Chief Secretary K. A. P. Sinha.

In the communication, Kumar has requested the Chief Secretary to “personally” examine the matter and direct the concerned officials to forward the panel of eligible officers at the earliest.

The reminder also refers to the commission’s earlier letter dated February 18, in which the UPSC had cited the February 5 directions of the Supreme Court of India and asked the state government to submit a complete proposal within 10 days.

The development comes in the backdrop of the apex court’s recent observations criticizing the practice of several states appointing acting DGPs instead of regular chiefs. In its February 5 ruling, the Supreme Court of India directed the UPSC to take action against states that delay sending proposals for the empanelment of officers for the DGP post.
