New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Mahesh Dixit (IPS: 1993, Andhra Pradesh cadre) as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) for a tenure of two years. Prior to his appointment, Dixit was serving as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau.

A seasoned intelligence officer, Mahesh Dixit has held several key assignments during his career. He served as the head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar, where he oversaw intelligence operations across Jammu & Kashmir and Leh.

During his tenure in the region, Dixit played a significant role in maintaining internal security and monitoring evolving security challenges, particularly in the period following the abrogation of Article 370. His experience in handling sensitive security matters is widely regarded as one of his key strengths.

Dixit’s appointment comes amid discussions over the leadership of the Intelligence Bureau. Earlier, Indianmandarins had reported that he was among the frontrunners for the top post if the Centre decided not to grant a third term to the outgoing Director, Tapan Kumar Deka (IPS: 1988, Himachal Pradesh cadre).

With his appointment, Mahesh Dixit will now lead India’s premier domestic intelligence agency, bringing decades of operational and strategic experience to one of the country’s most critical security institutions.
