Senior Indian Police Service officer Amit Garg has been appointed as the Director of the National Crime Records Bureau, or NCRB. Garg, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, is currently serving as the Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, or SVPNPA, in Hyderabad.
He has been appointed to lead the NCRB until October 31, 2027, the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The post has also been temporarily upgraded to the Director General level on a personal basis for Garg.
Garg will take over the position previously held by Alok Ranjan, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre. Ranjan had been appointed NCRB Director in September 2024 for a tenure up to his superannuation on June 30, 2026.
Amit Garg is a 1993-Batch IPS Officer
Amit Garg is a 1993-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. Before his latest appointment to the NCRB, he was heading the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
According to the official SVPNPA profile, Garg joined the academy as Joint Director on February 28, 2020. He was elevated to the position of Additional Director in February 2023 and was subsequently appointed Director of the academy in October 2024. Before joining SVPNPA, he served as Chairman of the State Level Police Recruitment Board in Andhra Pradesh.
His appointment to the NCRB marks another major central assignment in a career that has included senior leadership roles in police administration, recruitment and training.
To Serve as NCRB Director Until October 31, 2027
Under the appointment terms, Amit Garg will remain Director of the National Crime Records Bureau until October 31, 2027, which is the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The appointment places Garg at the head of one of the key organisations under the Ministry of Home Affairs dealing with national-level crime records, criminal justice information systems and crime-related data infrastructure.
His move to NCRB comes as part of a reshuffle involving senior leadership positions in important central police organisations and institutions.
Garg Moves From Police Training to Crime Records Bureau
Amit Garg has been leading SVPNPA, the Hyderabad-based institution responsible for the professional training of Indian Police Service officers.
His association with the academy has lasted several years. He initially joined SVPNPA as Joint Director in 2020, later became Additional Director and eventually took over as Director.
The transition to NCRB will move Garg from heading a premier police training institution to leading an organisation focused on crime data, records and technology-driven information systems used in policing.
His successor at SVPNPA will be Sujeet Pandey, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. Pandey has been appointed to head the academy until July 31, 2028, his date of superannuation, or until further orders.
Alok Ranjan Had Taken Charge of NCRB in 2024
Alok Ranjan, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was appointed Director of the NCRB in September 2024. His approved tenure was up to June 30, 2026, the date of his superannuation.
At the time of that appointment, Amit Garg was named Director of SVPNPA. The latest changes now move Garg from the National Police Academy to the NCRB.
Major New Responsibility for Amit Garg
As NCRB Director, Amit Garg will take charge of an organisation that plays an important role in maintaining and managing national crime information and supporting technology-based coordination across police and law-enforcement systems.
The new role gives Garg responsibility for leading the bureau at a time when data management, digital policing systems and technology-based criminal information sharing have become increasingly important components of law enforcement.
With experience in police recruitment administration as well as senior leadership at the National Police Academy, Garg will now take over the NCRB leadership role for a tenure running up to October 31, 2027.
