By NSB.News

New Delhi : Following the major reshuffle of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in Delhi on August 18, 2026, two senior women officers have been entrusted with key responsibilities in the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

Garima Bhatnagar (IPS: 1994, AGMUT cadre) will continue as the Special Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing, while also being given the additional charge of Managing Director of Delhi Police Housing Corporation Limited (DPHCL).

Meanwhile, Varsha Sharma (IPS: 2010, AGMUT cadre), who has been transferred from Goa to Delhi, has been appointed as Additional Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing.

The appointments place two senior women IPS officers at the helm of one of the Delhi Police’s most significant specialised investigation wings.

Garima Bhatnagar Continues as Special CP, EOW

Garima Bhatnagar was already serving as Special Commissioner of Police in the Economic Offences Wing and has retained the responsibility following the latest reshuffle.

In addition to her role in the EOW, she has now been assigned the additional charge of Managing Director, Delhi Police Housing Corporation Limited.

Bhatnagar was appointed to the position of Special Commissioner, EOW, on July 14, 2025. Earlier reports had also indicated that she was likely to continue in the role amid possible changes in the Delhi Police following the appointment of Anurag Kumar (IPS: 1994, AGMUT cadre) as the new Delhi Police Commissioner.

With the latest administrative changes, Bhatnagar continues to head the EOW at the Special Commissioner level.

Varsha Sharma Appointed Additional CP, EOW

Another key development in the reshuffle is the appointment of Varsha Sharma as Additional Commissioner of Police in the Economic Offences Wing.

An IPS officer of the 2010 AGMUT cadre, Sharma has been transferred from Goa to Delhi.

Her appointment strengthens the senior leadership structure of the EOW, where she will work on investigations involving complex financial and economic crimes.

The combination of Garima Bhatnagar as Special Commissioner and Varsha Sharma as Additional Commissioner places two women IPS officers in major leadership positions within the wing.

Why Delhi Police EOW Is an Important Wing

The Economic Offences Wing has emerged as a crucial specialised unit of the Delhi Police because of the growing number and complexity of financial crimes.

The EOW handles investigations related to several major categories of economic offences, including:

  • Bank frauds
  • Investment and financial scams
  • Corporate cheating
  • Criminal breach of trust
  • Real estate fraud
  • Land-related rackets
  • Other complex financial and economic crimes

Such investigations often involve large financial transactions, multiple companies, documents and regulatory issues, making coordination with other agencies particularly important.

EOW Coordinates With Major National Agencies

The Economic Offences Wing also works alongside and coordinates with several national regulatory and investigative agencies in matters involving financial crimes.

These include:

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
  • Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)
  • Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
  • Enforcement Directorate (ED)

Cases involving banking, securities, corporate transactions and alleged financial irregularities may require information-sharing and coordination between different investigating and regulatory bodies.

This makes the EOW an important part of the wider framework dealing with financial and economic offences in the national capital.

Two Women IPS Officers at the Helm

The latest reshuffle has brought Garima Bhatnagar and Varsha Sharma into key leadership positions in the EOW.

While Bhatnagar continues as the Special Commissioner of Police and takes on the additional responsibility of Managing Director of DPHCL, Sharma joins the wing as Additional Commissioner of Police after her transfer from Goa.

Their appointments come at a time when economic crimes, investment frauds, banking frauds and complex corporate cheating cases continue to require specialised investigation and coordination.

The August 18, 2026 Delhi IPS reshuffle has therefore given the Economic Offences Wing a significant new leadership structure, with both officers expected to play important roles in handling high-profile and complex financial crime investigations.
