New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested seven individuals, including two officers of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), involved in an alleged bribery racket. The operation, which began on Tuesday, led to the arrest of Joint Development Commissioner CPS Chauhan and Deputy Development Commissioner Prasad Varwantkar, both posted at the Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) in Mumbai.
In addition to the two IRS officers, five other individuals were arrested, including two Assistant Development Commissioners. The arrests were part of a broader investigation into corruption within the zone.

As part of the operation, CBI officials conducted searches at various locations tied to the arrested suspects. During the raids, around Rs 50 lakh in cash was seized. The officials said that the large sum of money was recovered from the premises of the accused individuals, underscoring the scale of the alleged bribery operation.
Majority of Seized Cash Found at Assistant Development Commissioner’s Premises
Officials revealed that the majority of the seized cash, approximately Rs 40 lakh, was found at the residence of Assistant Development Commissioner Rekha Nair, one of the individuals arrested in the operation. Investigators are probing whether the seized money is linked to alleged bribe payments connected to her role at the SEEPZ.
The CBI has stated that the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into corrupt practices within the zone, and further inquiries are expected.
