New Delhi, July 4: The process to select the next Chairman of NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation company, has entered its final stage with the Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) interviewing 18 candidates on Saturday for the top post.
The selection comes as the extended tenure of incumbent Chairman Gurdeep Singh is set to conclude on July 31, 2026, bringing to an end more than a decade at the helm of the public sector power giant. Subject to the recommendations of the SCSC and approval by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), the new Chairman is expected to assume charge on August 1, 2026.
The appointment process was shifted to the SCSC route after the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) was unable to recommend a suitable candidate during interviews conducted in May 2025. Subsequently, the Ministry of Power invited fresh applications for the post between February 28 and March 28, 2026.
The 18 candidates appearing before the SCSC represent leading public sector enterprises across the power and energy sectors. They include Shivam Srivastav, Director (Fuel), NTPC; Supendra Panda, Executive Director, NTPC; Devashish Panda, Executive Director, NTPC; Vijay Chand, Executive Director, NTPC; Ashok Sahgal, Executive Director, NTPC; Sarit Maheshwari, Executive Director, NTPC; L. K. Behra, Executive Director, NTPC; Ajay Kumar Shukla, Executive Director, NTPC; Anuj Jain, Director, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC); Manoj Sharma, Executive Director, IOC; Ajit Thakur, Executive Director, IOC; Hemant Rathor, Executive Director, IOC; Atul Kumar Tripathi, Executive Director, GAIL; Pankaj Panda, Executive Director, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL); Hemant Das, Executive Director, Power Finance Corporation (PFC); Kamlesh Kumar Jangid, Director (Finance), Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL); and Dipesh Nanda, Managing Director, Tata Power.
The appointment is being closely watched across the power sector, as the next NTPC Chairman will be responsible for steering the Maharatna PSU through its ambitious expansion plans in renewable energy, thermal power, green hydrogen, and energy transition initiatives while maintaining the company’s leadership in India’s power generation sector.
