New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed Sanjeev Khirwar (IAS: 1994: AGMUT) as the new Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), marking the return of the senior bureaucrat to a pivotal role in the national capital’s administrative setup.
Khirwar has succeeded Ashwani Kumar (IAS: 1992: AGMUT), who has been shifted to a strategic posting in Jammu & Kashmir. The change in leadership at the helm of the MCD comes at a crucial time, given the civic body’s key responsibilities related to urban governance, infrastructure, sanitation, and municipal services in Delhi.
Prior to this appointment, Sanjeev Khirwar had been serving in Ladakh, where he was posted after being moved out of Delhi in 2022. His return to the capital, formalised in the first week of January 2026, is being viewed as a strategic decision by the Centre to tap into his extensive experience and deep understanding of Delhi’s complex administrative and governance framework.
With his previous stints in the capital and familiarity with inter-agency coordination, Khirwar is expected to play a significant role in strengthening municipal governance and addressing key urban challenges facing Delhi.
