Lucknow : Since the process of appointing a permanent Director General of Police (DGP), Uttar Pradesh has not yet been started, it is most likely that an acting (DGP) will be appointed this time too. Incumbent officiating DGP Vijay Kumar (IPS: 1988: UP) is retiring on January 31, 2024.
Anand Kumar (IPS: 1988: UP) and Prashant Kumar (IPS: 1990: UP) are ahead in the race for the new DGP in UP. Vijay Kumar was appointed as acting DGP on May 31, 2023 after the retirement of R K Vishwakarma, another officiating DGP.
Besides Mukul Goyal (IPS: 1987: UP), who served as state DGP but was removed for dereliction of duty, Anand Kumar, Safi Ahsan Rizvi (IPS: 1989: UP), Ashish Gupta (IPS: 1989: UP), Aditya Mishra (IPS: 1989: UP), PV Ram Shastri (IPS: 1989: UP), Sandeep Salunke (IPS: 1990: UP), Daljit Chaudhary (IPS: 1990: UP), Renuka Mishra (IPS: 1990: UP), BK Maurya (IPS: 1990: UP), SN Sabat (IPS: 1990: UP), Avinash Chandra (IPS: 1990: UP), Tanuja Srivastava (IPS: 1990: UP), SK Mathur (IPS: 1990: UP) and Subhash Chandra (IPS: 1990: UP) are some other senior IPS officers.
Though the list of officers in terms of seniority & eligibility goes longer making the picture a little puzzling but Prashant Kumar is seen as the foremost choice of Yogi administration that has been leveraging on its image built around “Law & order”.
