New Delhi: Muanpuii Saiawi (IFS: 2005), currently serving as the High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, has been concurrently accredited as India’s next High Commissioner to Niue, with residence in Wellington. The accreditation took place on August 21, 2026, adding another important diplomatic responsibility to her existing portfolio in the Pacific region.

Muanpuii Saiawi’s Diplomatic Role in New Zealand

Muanpuii Saiawi was appointed as the High Commissioner of India to New Zealand on January 19, 2026. At the time of her appointment, she was serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Her experience in the Ministry of External Affairs and her current assignment in New Zealand place her at the centre of India’s diplomatic engagement with countries in the Pacific region.

Additional Responsibility for Samoa

Saiawi has also been concurrently accredited as India’s next High Commissioner to the Independent State of Samoa. She received this accreditation on June 23, 2023, with her residence in Wellington. Samoa is one of the important Pacific Island countries with which India has been strengthening diplomatic and development cooperation.

Accreditation to Cook Islands

In another recent diplomatic assignment, Saiawi was concurrently accredited as India’s next High Commissioner to the Cook Islands on May 29, 2026. With the latest accreditation to Niue, her diplomatic responsibilities now cover New Zealand along with several Pacific Island nations.

Why Niue Matters for India

Niue is a small self-governing island country in the South Pacific. India has been expanding its engagement with Pacific Island countries through development partnerships, climate cooperation, capacity building and people-to-people ties.

The latest accreditation is expected to further strengthen India’s diplomatic engagement with Niue and the wider Pacific region.

India’s Growing Engagement with the Pacific

India has increasingly focused on strengthening relations with Pacific Island countries under its broader Indo-Pacific outreach. Areas such as climate change, disaster management, sustainable development, maritime cooperation and capacity building have emerged as important areas of cooperation.

With Saiawi based in Wellington, India can continue to coordinate its diplomatic engagement with multiple Pacific Island nations from its mission in New Zealand.
