Zimbabwe to Face India on February 26
By NSB.News
The Australia national cricket team have been eliminated from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after the match between Ireland cricket team and Zimbabwe national cricket team was washed out due to rain. With the shared points, Zimbabwe moved to five points from three matches, while Australia could reach a maximum of only four points even if they won their final game.
Australia paid the price for earlier defeats against Zimbabwe and the Sri Lanka national cricket team. Although they began their campaign with a win over Ireland, they suffered a 23-run loss to Zimbabwe followed by an eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka, which ultimately sealed their fate.
Where Did Australia Go Wrong?
Australia’s early exit has come as a major surprise given the strength of their batting lineup. However, the absence of key fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood due to injuries weakened their bowling attack. The team failed to deliver with the ball against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, leading to costly defeats.
For Zimbabwe, this marks a historic achievement. It is the first time they have reached the Super 8 stage of a T20 World Cup. They are now set to face the India national cricket team on February 26 in a crucial Super 8 encounter. This will also be the first time Zimbabwe are guaranteed to finish among the top eight teams in the tournament.
First Group-Stage Exit in 17 Years
Australia have exited the T20 World Cup in the group stage for the first time in 17 years, having previously suffered a similar fate in 2009. Since winning the title in 2021, Australia’s performances in the tournament have declined—eliminated in the Super 12 stage in 2022, knocked out in the Super 8 in 2024, and now exiting in the group stage in 2026.
The unexpected result has added a dramatic twist to the tournament, while Zimbabwe’s remarkable progress has captured global attention.
