NEW DELHI (29.05.2026): The first ever Chairman of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), Dhanendra Kumar (Retd IAS: 1968: HY), who served in the post from February 2009 to June 2011, died in a fire caused after a suspected air-conditioner blast at his residence in Delhi’s Hauz Khas area. His son sustained injuries in the incident and is currently undergoing treatment.
During his distinguished administrative career, Kumar held several senior positions in both the Central Government and the Government of Haryana. He played an important role in shaping decisions related to India’s competition law regime and broader economic reforms.
He served as Secretary in various Union Ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and the Ministry of Culture. He also held the position of Chairman and Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Corporation.
Kumar represented India at the international level as well. Between November 2005 and January 2009, he served as the Executive Director at the World Bank for India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. During his tenure, he worked on several economic and development-related initiatives concerning South Asian countries.
The Haryana IAS Officers Association expressed deep condolences over his demise. The association also informed that the cremation will take place on 30.05.2026 at around 12 noon at the Cremation Ground, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
