Selection Gamble Backfires, Coach Explains Strategy

In the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Super-8 stage, Team India faced their first defeat of the round, going down by 76 runs against South Africa. The match, played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, saw a surprising change in India’s playing XI. Vice-captain Axar Patel was left out, while Washington Sundar was included — a move that ultimately did not pay off.
After the match, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate explained the reasoning behind the decision. He said the team management opted for a better off-spin option considering South Africa’s top order had multiple left-handed batters. According to him, players like Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton and David Miller posed the biggest threats, and an off-spinner was expected to be effective during the powerplay.
What Do the Numbers Say?
Statistically, Sundar has a better powerplay record against left-handers. He has taken 23 wickets in 57 innings, compared to Axar’s 14 wickets in 62 innings. However, the story changes in the middle overs. Axar has been significantly more effective there, claiming 63 wickets in 79 innings, while Sundar has managed 23 wickets in 48 innings.
During the match, when Varun Chakravarthy proved expensive, India lacked strong middle-over options. Sundar bowled only two overs in the middle phase, conceding 17 runs without taking a wicket. Experts believe that if Axar had played, he could have bowled his full quota and potentially controlled South Africa’s scoring momentum.
Miller–Brevis Partnership Turns the Game
At one stage, South Africa were struggling at 20 for 3, and India appeared to be in control. However, David Miller stitched together a crucial partnership with Dewald Brevis, shifting the momentum dramatically.
The duo counterattacked aggressively, putting Indian bowlers under pressure. India failed to pick up wickets in the middle overs, allowing South Africa to post a formidable total. From a precarious position, South Africa staged a remarkable comeback to seal a commanding 76-run victory.
With this loss, India now face increased pressure in the Super-8 stage, and team selection strategies are likely to come under sharper scrutiny in the matches ahead.
