Jaipur (20.04.2026): In a major boost to India’s renewable energy push, Coal India Limited has awarded its first-ever solar EPC contract to Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited, marking a significant step in its transition beyond coal

By NSB.News

State-run mining giant Coal India Limited has declared Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL) as the L1 bidder for a massive 875 MW AC grid-connected solar PV project. The project will be executed on a turnkey EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) basis and is valued at approximately ₹3,490 crore, including operations & maintenance (O&M) and taxes.

This marks Coal India’s first confirmed solar EPC award, signaling a strategic diversification from its core coal mining operations into large-scale renewable energy development. The project will be developed in Bikaner, a region known for high solar irradiation, making it ideal for utility-scale solar projects.

The scope of the project includes complete turnkey execution—covering engineering, procurement, construction, grid connectivity, and multi-year O&M services, all bundled within the total contract value.

In addition to this landmark win, Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited has also secured a separate 50 MW AC solar project in Maharashtra from a leading private independent power producer (IPP).

With these new orders, SWREL’s total EPC order inflows for FY26 have crossed ₹10,062 crore, significantly exceeding its initial annual targets.

Commenting on the achievement, Chandra Kishore Thakur, Global CEO of SWREL, said the company is excited to partner with Coal India in its renewable energy journey. He added that crossing the ₹10,000 crore mark in order inflows highlights strong growth momentum, with India continuing to emerge as a key market for renewable energy expansion.
