The West Bengal government has appointed Manoj Kumar Verma (IPS: 1998: WB) as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner, succeeding Vineet Kumar Goyal. Prior to this role, Verma served as the Additional Director General (Law & Order) in West Bengal.
Goyal’s transfer to the position of ADG of the Special Task Force follows criticism of his handling of the rape and murder case involving a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The decision to remove him came after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a late-night meeting with protesting doctors regarding the incident. Goyal had previously taken over as Kolkata Police Commissioner in 2021, succeeding Soumen Mittra.
